New Post: Small issue with documentation

Hello. Thanks for this library, but I'm having a little trouble getting it to work fully.

In the documentation it says use this line of code:

TmdbMovie[] movies = api.MovieSearch("batman");

However, I get this error message:
_"Error 1 Cannot implicitly convert type 'System.Collections.Generic.IEnumerable<TheMovieDb.TmdbMovie>' to 'TheMovieDb.TmdbMovie[]'. An explicit conversion exists (are you missing a cast?) _

I can't seem to crack this one, can someone explain what I'm doing wrong? Thanks.

Hello

I'm creating a movie database application using Visual Basic .NET 2010 and TheMovieDB.dll. When I try to pass releasemin and releasemax values to the MovieBrowse method I receive the following error, Expecting State 'Element'..Encountered 'Text' with name '', namespace "." I'm passing datetime values. Other parameters of the MovieBrowse method works like page, perpage, query, and genres. Is there something wrong with the dll's processing of releasemin and releasemax or am I passing the values incorrectly? Could you tell me how to pass the values for those parameters or is there something that needs to be fixed in the dll?

I tried defining the values this way

Dim dReleaseMin As System.Nullable(Of DateTime) = CDate("01/01/2011 12:01:00 AM")

Dim dReleaseMax As System.Nullable(Of DateTime) = CDate("01/31/2011 11:59:00 PM")

and this way

Dim dReleaseMin As DateTime = CDate("01/01/2011 00:01")

Dim dReleaseMax As DateTime = CDate("01/31/2011 23:59")

Started using this library in Powershell. Works great. Would like to see cast/crew retrieval added for a particular movie. Granted, it was relatively easy to build URL for cast retrieval, then convert JSON results, but would be nice to have it in this library.

Thank you, the patch works.
When no movie is found, the MovieSearch function returns "Nothing".

Hi,

When i try to run the API behind a proxy server i get the exception :
"The remote server returned an error: (407) Proxy Authentication Required."

Does the API support proxy authentication ?
I can't find any proxy authentication parameters.

If not, is this something that could be implemented in future releases ?

This seems to be a problem across the board when no results are returned from the API. There's a method in TmdbApi called DownloadData that makes the service calls and deserializes the results into the appropriate type. When the results aren't valid, deserialization fails and the exception is throw. I'm looking into figuring out a more graceful way to handle no results and will submit a patch here shortly.

Hi,

I'm using Visual Studio 2010 to write a vb.NET application that uses TheMovieDB api.
When any result is found on a search, the application runs fine.
When no results are found when searching for a movie, i get an exception on Tmdb.MovieSeach().
I use code below to search for a movie.

Dim Tmdb As New TmdbApi("xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx")
Dim Movies As List(Of TmdbMovie) = Tmdb.MovieSearch("Blabla")

Exception (when no results are found) :
NL - "Status Element wordt verwacht.. Text met naam , naamruimte is aangetroffen."
EN - "Status element is expected.. Text with name, namespace is found."

I also tried with another declaration of the 'Movies' variable, but then i get an exception on every search.

Dim Tmdb As New TmdbApi("xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx")
Dim Movies() As TmdbMovie = Tmdb.MovieSearch("Blabla")

Exception (on every search):
NL - "Kan een object van het type TheMovieDb.TmdbMovies niet converteren naar het type TheMovieDb.TmdbMovie[]."
EN - "Cannot convert the object of type TheMovieDb.TmdbMovies to type TheMovieDb.TmdbMovie[]."

Could anyone tell me how to declare the Movies variable correctly in vb.NET ?
Or is there any vb.NET documentation on the API ?

I was just using it wrong. When you use the movie search function your only get a few of the values. After you search for the movie you need to use the movieID and get the rest the values with the movie info funtion. I know this is vague but it has been a while and I don't have my code here with me.

using - Visual Studio C#

I seem to be getting back only null results when I try to get the cast members for a movie. Everything else is working fine so I know I am connecting ok and retrieving information.Here is a little code snippet of how I am getting cast info-

TmdbMovie movie;

TmdbCastPerson[] cast;

cast = movie.Cast;

Nothing real fancy. But like I said, movie.Name or any other variable comes up with values no problem.
Actually, here is a shot of all the variables on the movie. There are a lot of null values. Is my API out of date or something? I just downloaded the latest version from here (1.2?), or so I thought.Here is a watch I put on the variable-

It's like this for all movies, so it isn't just that the movie doesn't have those fields.
Any ideas?

I must say, I feel it is a more fundamental flaw in the project.

Quite a lot of places in the code where a piece of information is thought as a number, the variable is defined as decimal or integer.

And since there apparently is no xml schema (afaik) for the results from tmdb, we WILL run onto trouble sooner or later.

My own philosophy on the subject is: If I don't expect to do any arithmetic on it, it is a STRING

You might be receiving another XML error when it hits the image elements.

Looks as though tmdb have added more sizes which the enum doesn't specify.

Workaround is to add w342, w154 and w1280 (there may be more) as sizes to the enum.

TmdbImageSize.cs

Hi,

when looking at the exception I can see that you use a german version of Visual Studio xx. The problem ist that the API has a globalization problem:

1. All variables of the type decimal can not be converted because they return as decimal seperator a period (".") instead of a comma (",").

2. You cannot get german text infos because always "en/xml" is used.

English only URL:
private const string MOVIE_SEARCH_URL = http://api.themoviedb.org/2.1/Movie.search/en/xml/{0}/{1}

International URL:
private const string MOVIE_SEARCH_URL = http://api.themoviedb.org/2.1/Movie.search/{2}/xml/{0}/{1}

where "{2}" is "de-DE" or "de" for german.

A different way to get the information from the XML response is to put then into Dataset which you can display in a DataGrid

thanks for this API, but it seems broken for me. Starting the example project results in an XML error. Same problem in my own project:

Correction:

Better to return no score indicating it was not scored than a 0 score.

Hi,

The tmdb api has changed. In some cases no value is provided for the score property of movies. The current version of this API throws an exception:

There is an error in XML document (8, 8).

I've been able to get around this by making a nullable property in the TmdbMovie class.

I'm not sure if the field is simply broken and if Tmdb will fix it, so for now I consider this a temporary workaround.
